Overcoming Frustration

(Flow Line Drawing Exercises)

Frustration is a problem because it creates tension in the body, heart and mind. Tension blocks creativity and stops you from feeling your best. I know this from my own experience and from learning from teachers who trained in traditions passed down for thousands of years. These practices teach us how to notice and release tension so we can tap into our creative potential and live with more joy.

You can test this for yourself. You don’t need to just believe me, try it in your own life. Frustration happens to everyone. For some, it’s constant; for others, it’s occasional. No matter how often it shows up, tension, whether it feels like frustration, anxiety, fear, or anger, is something to transform because it blocks your ability to feel calm, happy, and creative.

Think of your creativity like water flowing through a hose. If the hose is restricted, the water slows down or stops. Tension in your mind, emotions, and body works the same way. It restricts the flow of creativity, love, and energy. To stay open and creative, We need to learn how to let go of tension. This is the foundation for creating the life you dream of.

One way I practice this is through flow line drawing exercises. It’s like a moving meditation, a way to focus on the process, not the result. When we draw, we can feel frustrated if the art doesn’t look how we want. We might judge ourselves or think the drawing isn’t good enough. But the exercise isn’t about creating something perfect or beautiful, it’s about letting go of those judgments and returning to a relaxed, alert state of flow.

Sometimes, things happen that are out of our control, like spilling ink while I was drawing. In those moments, it’s easy to get upset or criticize the self. But the practice is about learning to stay calm and open, even when things don’t go as planned. Instead of getting stuck in frustration, I remind myself to return to a relaxed and alert state. This mindset is what creates the ability to see opportunities, find beauty in unexpected places, and turn challenges into creative solutions. This is practiced with feeling, flowing.

The key is to make relaxation and alert presence without judgement, a practice. This is not just something you think about, but something you do in action regularly to develop an enhanced body, heart, mind dynamic. Like any skill, it takes time and effort, but it’s possible for anyone, no matter their age or background. By practicing this, you’ll notice life becoming brighter, more enjoyable, and full of creative possibilities.

You don’t have to wait for others to change or for things to be perfect. Start with yourself. Practice staying open, relaxed, and alert, that means curious. Over time, you’ll see that life itself becomes a work of art, one that is shaped by the liberated creativity that flows through your heart.
