Chopper P-arts

contemporary figurative art

These works were created using a forgotten series of photographs taken in 2006. The location of the photo shoot was a custom vintage chopper mechanics shop called Powerplant located on Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles, CA. I have long admired the work of Yaniv as I found his approach to building motorcycles sculptural and painterly.

At the time I was shooting nudes in the back alleys behind Melrose Ave at night, utilizing the amazing graffiti on the walls as backdrops for a new figurative series. There was no intention to shoot at Powerplant, it just so happened that the garage was open and a couple of mechanics were there late night wrenching on some bikes. I asked if my mostly nude model and I could make a few photographs inside the garage inspired by the parts and industrial machinery everywhere. Not surprisingly, they did not object.

16 years later I visited Yaniv, the creative force behind PowerPlant which is still at the same location, to ask about doing some work on my 1981 Harley Davidson FXWG chopper and perhaps have him leave his artistic iron touch on my ride. Being there brought back the memories of this shoot, so when I returned back to the studio to find the images I spontaneously assembled this mini series from the few photographs taken that night many moons ago.
