The Inner Weather
“Thoughts and emotions are movements within you, not instructions you must follow.”
Thoughts and emotions continually move through the human system. A thought may arise from memory, fear, conditioning, imagination, or insight. An emotion may reveal pain, desire, loss, uncertainty, or a boundary that has been crossed. Both may carry useful information, but neither must automatically determine our identity or direct our actions.
The difficulty begins when we become identified with what is passing through us. We do not simply notice an anxious thought; we enter the future it imagines. We do not merely feel anger; we allow it to speak and act through us. As negative thought and emotion take hold, the body contracts, the heart closes, and the mind loses its clarity. We move out of alignment and away from the inner center from which true guidance arises.
The Love and Truth Practice teaches us how to let thought and emotion pass through the body, heart, and mind without allowing the entire system to be overtaken by them. This is not suppression, avoidance, or detachment. We allow ourselves to feel what is present while remaining aware that we are greater than the temporary condition moving through us.
Thoughts may pass like clouds through an open sky. Emotions may rise and fall like waves within the ocean. We do not need to fight them, follow them, or build a home within them. The practice is to remain present as they move.
Active meditation begins by noticing when we have gone out of alignment. The body provides an immediate and trustworthy signal. Tightness in the face, shallow breathing, pressure in the chest, a clenched stomach, or tension in the muscles reveals that thought and emotion are affecting the whole system. Rather than analyzing the experience or reacting from it, we pause, observe, breathe, soften the tension, and return the body, heart, and mind to an open, relaxed, and alert state of presence.
Alert presence is not more thinking. It is clear observation of the inner and outer moment without judgment, resistance, or fear. As alignment is restored, spaciousness returns. We can hear the thought and feel the emotion without surrendering our center to either one. Love allows us to meet the experience with compassion, while Truth helps us recognize what the moment actually requires.
This is the Love and Truth way of active meditation: recognize the contraction, release the tension, restore alignment, and allow the heart to guide the response.
Inner freedom does not mean difficult thoughts and emotions disappear. It means they are free to pass through without becoming the rulers of our lives.
The inner weather will continue to change. The practice is to remain centered beneath it.
