Align the Ego
“The ego serves the journey when it is aligned with the truth of who we are.”
The ego can be understood simply as the identity of the mind, our accumulated beliefs, memories, opinions, conditioning, preferences, and personal history. It gives us the psychological identity we use to navigate everyday life.
The difficulty begins when we become completely identified with this aspect of ourselves. Our beliefs become who I am. Our opinions become who I am. Our past becomes who I am. When these are challenged, we can become defensive, fearful, angry, or rigid because the mind experiences the challenge as a threat to the self.
More profoundly, when the ego is misaligned, it can begin directing our life according to its conditioning rather than the deeper path illuminated by the true self. Fear may tell us not to take the opportunity. An old belief may convince us that we are incapable or undeserving. The need for approval may lead us away from what the heart is asking us to do. What we often call self-sabotage can be understood in this way: the ego is attempting to navigate life from the limited information of its conditioning, unknowingly steering us away from the very life we are here to explore.
Recognizing the suffering created by identification with the ego, some spiritual approaches emphasize transcending, suppressing, or even “killing” it. Love and Truth takes a different approach. The ego has a necessary function. The purpose is not to abandon part of ourselves, but to bring the entire human system into alignment.
Love and Truth sees this system as body, heart, and mind. The body provides energy and action. The heart is our intuitive GPS, sensing direction and deeper purpose. The mind thinks, interprets, plans, and organizes. Within the mind sits the ego, our personal identity.
Through the Love and Truth Practice, awareness expands beyond identification with the ego. Active meditation teaches us to witness thoughts, emotions, and reactions without automatically becoming them. We begin to realize that if we can observe our identity, there is an awareness beyond that identity doing the observing.
This deeper awareness is what Love and Truth refers to as the true self, the Being, the captain of the vessel.
From this orientation, nothing needs to be rejected. The heart provides direction, the mind and ego help navigate, and the body brings that guidance into action. By continually returning to an open, relaxed, and alert state of presence, the mind becomes clearer, the ego becomes more flexible, and the intuitive guidance of the heart becomes easier to perceive.
The ego can then serve rather than unconsciously steer the journey. Body, heart, and mind begin moving together under the guidance of the true self, allowing us to live with greater purpose and move toward the vision held within the heart.
The ego serves the journey when it becomes aligned with the deeper truth that is guiding it.
