A Seeking Mind
“You do not need to understand the whole mystery to take the next meaningful step into it.”
There are dimensions of existence so vast that the thinking mind cannot fully contain them. Consciousness, infinity, the origins of existence, and even the mystery of our own life can exceed the frameworks through which the intellect normally understands reality. When the mind encounters something beyond its ability to frame, we may experience awe, a glimpse of something greater than our present understanding.
Yet the unknown can also create anxiety. The mind wants certainty. It wants to understand where the relationship will lead, whether the creative path will succeed, what our purpose is, or how the future will unfold before taking the next step. What appears to be careful thinking can quietly become fear seeking security.
The Love and Truth Practice develops another relationship with the unknown: the seeking mind.
A seeking mind does not pretend to know what it does not know, nor does it become paralyzed because the whole cannot yet be understood. It remains curious, open, and willing to discover. Like standing before the Grand Canyon, we do not need to comprehend its entire vastness to experience the awe of what is before us.
This is also the landscape of the Hero’s Journey. The hero leaves the familiar village and enters the unknown forest without seeing the entire path ahead. If complete certainty were required before entering, the journey would never begin, and the treasure would never be discovered.
Through active meditation, Love and Truth trains us to remain open, relaxed, and alert within uncertainty. We notice when the body contracts, the heart closes, or the mind begins demanding answers the present moment cannot yet provide. Rather than allowing fear to pull us back toward the familiar, we return to alignment.
From this centered state, we do not need to see one hundred steps ahead. We become present enough to recognize the next step. The heart provides intuitive direction, the clear mind helps interpret what is available, and the body carries that guidance into action. As we move, new information appears and another part of the path becomes visible.
Awe becomes important because it allows us to encounter something greater than our current understanding without immediately reducing it to a conclusion. Every glimpse can expand awareness and deepen our capacity to remain present with the vastness of what we do not yet know.
The seeking mind is therefore not ignorance. It is an intelligent openness to what has not yet been revealed. As my grandmother would say, “He who seeks shall find.”
Allow yourself not to know everything. Stay present, trust the next clear step, and let the mystery reveal itself as you walk.
