The Highland Tree Sculpture

This project is the result of seeking a solution to an urban problem. Ficus trees in Los Angeles help put the children of plumbers thru college because the roots invade and clog the sewer lines under the street for which the homeowner is responsible for the $20,000 repair bill. The option presented was to chop down the tree and leave the stump as most homeowners do. Instead a path of transformation was chosen, to bring light where dead things reside. Unexpectedly, during the process of making this sculpture come to life, People in the neighborhood would stop by with a big smile and share a moment.  I could not imagine the amount of appreciation expressed, it revealed to me in a new dimension the value art has in a community.
